The Federal Ministry of Finance officially confirmed on September 20, 2024 that over 2.5 million incorrect tax assessments were sent out in 2023! More than two out of three notices are affected. Here are the five most important things you should know if you suspect your tax assessment may be incorrect:

1. how many tax assessments are affected?

In 2023, the tax office sent out over 2.5 million incorrect tax assessments – that’s 68.8% of all assessments. This means that more than every second notice is incorrect!

2. what makes a tax assessment wrong?

A tax assessment is only officially wrong if you lodge an objection. If you have not done so, the assessment becomes legally binding after one month – and you can no longer change anything. So: always check!

3 Why are so many notices incorrect?

The tax office often does not recognize expenses, estimates income incorrectly or does not take current court decisions into account. These errors can significantly influence your decision in your favor.

4 Is an objection worthwhile?

Absolutely! More than 68% of appeals were successful in 2023. It is therefore worth questioning your tax assessment and lodging an appeal if something is wrong.

5 How do you lodge a legally secure objection?

You only have one month! Use the objection from PepperPapers.de and protect yourself. Even if your decision appears to be correct, ongoing court proceedings could change things. An appeal keeps this option open for you.

If you are unsure, take a look at PepperPapers.com in the category “Tax office objections” and find the right sample objection for your case. Don’t miss any deadlines and protect yourself from incorrect notices!
